Modals in English | Can, Could, May, Might, Must | Auxiliary Verbs

Can

This modal is used to express ability and capacity

  • I can lift weight up to 70kg
  • You can’t speak Chinese.
  • Can she open this box?
  • This bottle can carry 1 litter of water

It is frequently used to ask for permission

  • Can I use your washroom?
  • Can I take your pen?
  • Can I raise the volume?
  • Can I leave now?

It also used to make requests or suggestions

  • Can I have more chairs?
  • Can I have the receipt?
  • You can sell this stock.
  • You can consult with the doctor.

Could

Could is considered past form of Can, it is also used to express ability and capacity but for the past actions.

  • I could jump from twelve feet wall in my childhood
  • You could see him falling
  • This bike could give the best mileage

This modal is also used to express permission politely

  • Could I have your shirt?
  • You could borrow my bike.
  • Could I use your chair?
  • Could I get you more rice?

Used to express possibility

  • I could drive a car
  • I could invite him
  • Could it be original?
  • This college could open in August.

May

May is frequently used to ask for formal permission

  • May I come in to the office?
  • May I take a little brake now?
  • May I ask a question?
  • May I go with you?

It's also used to suggest something that is possible

  • You may buy this stock.
  • He may not be worry about this.
  • It may rain today
  • He may come with you

Might

Might is considered past form of May and used to suggest less possibility than "may" does

  • The train might have come.
  • He might invite you
  • I might not work with you any longer
  • Today might be Sunday
  • You might have forgotten it.
  • The school might have been closed

Must

It is used to express something that is strongly necessary

  • You must finish your work by 15th of August
  • Candidates must follow exam rules
  • You must study hard for success
  • Every person must give a side to an ambulance
  • You must answer my question.

Used to show that something is very likely

  • You must be a genuine person.
  • He must be kidding!
  • It must be an accident
  • You must be exhausted.
